SGE announced a £35 billion project to build small modular reactors at three sites, with operations targeted for 2034. The fleet would supply power to about eight million homes.
news.sky.comA Polish-led consortium named SGE has unveiled plans to build 14 nuclear reactors across Britain at a total cost of £35 billion, GB News reported. The reactors would generate enough electricity to power around eight million homes and supply up to 11 per cent of Britain's electricity.
The group plans to construct the reactors at three sites, with six 300 MW units at the first location and four units each at two additional sites for a combined capacity of 4.2 GW.
Commercial operations are targeted to begin in 2034. The Oldbury-on-Severn site in South Gloucestershire has been identified as a potential location for up to six reactors. GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy would manufacture the BWRX-300 small modular reactors.
These units heat water with nuclear fuel to produce high-pressure steam that drives electricity-generating turbines, using modular components built in factories and transported to the sites. Jason Cooper, chief executive of GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, said the project reflects growing momentum behind new nuclear across Europe.
Rafał Kasprów, SGE's chief executive, stated the group would generate electricity at a price below that agreed for Hinkley Point C but did not disclose the figure.
SGE plans to secure a Contract for Difference agreement rather than seek direct government funding. The consortium expects to join the Advanced Nuclear Pipeline by November, with site selection and financial support discussions to conclude by the middle of 2027. The consortium is led by Polish billionaire Michal Solowow.
