Poll Finds 52 Percent of Democrats Want Party to Shift Toward Center
A New York Times/Siena poll released Wednesday shows that 52 percent of likely Democratic voters believe the party's 2028 presidential nominee should move the party toward the center. The survey also found broad dissatisfaction with economic conditions and President Trump's handling of cost-of-living issues.

A New York Times/Siena poll released Wednesday found that 52 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters want the party's 2028 presidential nominee to reposition the party along more moderate lines. When asked about specific issues, 50 percent of respondents said they would like the candidate to move the party to the center on crime and 46 percent on immigration.
On healthcare, 45 percent said they would like the candidate to move the party to the left, while about a quarter each said the party should stay the same or move to the center.
Fifty-five percent of Democrats said they are generally satisfied with the party, while only 31 percent of Democratic-leaning independent voters said the same. Ninety-eight percent of voters in the independent group expressed dissatisfaction with the Republican Party. U.S. as fair or poor. Ninety-five percent said they disapproved of the way President Trump has handled cost-of-living issues.
While no Democrats have formally entered the 2028 presidential race, potential candidates mentioned in the survey include California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Illinois Gov.
JB Pritzker, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. 8 percentage points. Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters also expressed strong agreement on affordability concerns, an issue that could affect the midterm elections this November.
