An AP-NORC survey shows roughly three in ten Jewish adults or their household members experienced assault, harassment or property damage tied to their background in the past year. About one in ten reported a physical assault and a similar share reported property damage. Two in ten said they or a household member faced verbal harassment or online abuse.
About six in ten Jewish adults describe prejudice against Jews as an extremely or very serious problem. Roughly one-third say they feel very or somewhat safe as a Jewish person in the U.S. today, one-third feel very or somewhat unsafe, and the rest feel neither.
Six in ten also say they feel less safe than before the October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel. Those who identify as Jewish by religion or report strong emotional attachment to Israel are more likely to express this view.
Four in ten Jewish adults say they are less likely to wear, carry or display items that identify them as Jewish than before the 2023 attacks. Some cited concerns that such symbols could be linked to Israel’s actions in Gaza.
About half of Jewish adults say anti-Israel protests are not a form of antisemitism, while roughly four in ten say they are. Two-thirds say criticizing Israel’s military actions is not antisemitic. The overwhelming majority consider vandalizing synagogues or Jewish-owned businesses, denying the Holocaust, or holding U.S. Jews responsible for Israel’s actions to be antisemitic.
