When asked which party’s candidate they would support if the election were held today, 48 percent chose the Democrat and 45 percent chose the Republican.
The margin narrowed from a five-point Democratic lead recorded in the same poll in May.
President Trump’s job approval stood at 40 percent. More than 60 percent of respondents disapproved of his handling of the economy and Iran. Thirty-nine percent said they trusted Republicans more to handle the economy, compared with 35 percent who trusted Democrats.
On broader questions about the parties, the Republican Party scored one percentage point higher than the Democratic Party on which party voters agreed with more on important issues and which better represented their personal values. Democrats held an advantage on which party was more concerned with the needs of people like them.
The poll was conducted online from July 8 to 13 among 2,092 registered voters and carried a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.
It came almost a month after three socialist candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won congressional primaries.
