An AtlasIntel survey conducted in early May found that 45.4 percent of Republican respondents would back the secretary of state in a primary contest against the vice president, who received 29.6 percent support. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis received 11.2 percent, Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy 1.4 percent and Texas Governor Greg Abbott 0.7 percent.

The poll was fielded May 4-7 and sampled 2,069 American adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. The secretary of state outperformed the vice president in overall public perception. Among all respondents, 51 percent viewed the secretary of state unfavorably while 46 percent held a favorable opinion.

The vice president’s ratings stood at 58 percent unfavorable and 37 percent favorable. He holds the positions of secretary of state and national security adviser, the same combination last used by Henry Kissinger.

The secretary of state spoke at a White House press conference last week outlining the administration’s foreign policy agenda. The vice president participated in peace negotiations in April aimed at ending the Iran conflict that ended within a day. That same month the vice president visited Budapest to support then-Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who was later ousted.

” The New York Times reported last month that the vice president had opposed a full-scale war with Iran inside the White House.

Both officials have declined to discuss their future plans publicly. At a dinner in the White House Rose Garden on Monday he asked attendees, “Are you ready? Who likes JD Vance? ” Trump added that a pairing of the two would be a “dream ticket” but did not indicate a preference for the top of the ticket.

” If either pursues a 2028 bid, a central question will be how closely to align with the current administration’s record on foreign policy and tariffs.
