Pope Leo XIV Leads First Easter Vigil and Calls for Global Peace

Pope Leo XIV led his first Easter vigil service as pontiff on Saturday night at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. ' The ceremony included candle bearers lighting candles for congregants, spreading light throughout the space before the main lights were turned on as the pope reached the altar.

In his homily, Pope Leo XIV described sin as a heavy barrier that separates people from God and compared it to the stone that covered Jesus’ tomb, which was found overturned after his resurrection. He stated that modern stones representing sins, such as mistrust, fear, selfishness, and resentment, can lead to larger issues like war, injustice, and the isolation of nations.

The pope urged the faithful not to be paralyzed by these barriers and to commit to fostering harmony and peace worldwide.

On Palm Sunday, Pope Leo XIV remarked that God does not listen to the prayers of those who engage in war or use religion to justify violence.

As part of the Easter vigil tradition, Pope Leo XIV baptized 10 adults from various parts of the world during the Mass. This event occurred during his first Holy Week as pope, which includes several demanding rituals. For instance, on Good Friday, he carried the cross for all 14 stations of the Way of the Cross, a practice not performed by a pope for decades.

On Holy Thursday, Pope Leo XIV washed the feet of 12 priests, reviving a traditional aspect of the ritual that his predecessor, Pope Francis, had modified by including laypeople and non-Christians. This action underscores the pope's approach to certain customs within the Catholic Church.
