Pope Leo XIV Visits Lampedusa as Italy Reports Fewer Migrant Arrivals

Pope Leo XIV visited Lampedusa island on July 4, 2026, to pray at a migrant cemetery and celebrate Mass for residents and new arrivals. He laid a wreath of yellow and white flowers on graves marked by crosses made from shipwreck wood, then walked alone onto jagged jetty rocks where wind blew off his zucchetto as he looked out to sea.

He blessed a plaque dedicating the dock to Pope Francis before celebrating Mass on land.

“This is a place where gestures speak louder than words,” Pope Leo XIV said. ” In his homily he thanked Lampedusa residents for the “miracle of compassion” and urged Europe to address migration through immediate relief and long-term strategies that integrate migrants while developing their home countries.

“Here you have seen not just one, but thousands of human beings fallen into the hands of robbers who have taken everything from them, beat them brutally and walked away, leaving them half-dead,” he said.

Italy’s Interior Ministry reported 14,464 migrant arrivals as of July 3, 2026, down from 30,598 in the same period of 2025. The International Organization for Migration has recorded more than 35,000 missing migrants in the Mediterranean since 2014. Salvatore Sortino, the IOM’s head of mission for Italy and Malta, said the number of deaths at sea had increased proportionally despite fewer arrivals.

Tareke Brhane, president of the October 3rd Committee, said the visit sends a “strong message” of solidarity and supports efforts to register migrant deaths. Pope Leo XIV visited Spain’s Canary Islands in June 2026 and has previously criticized human traffickers.
