Portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama Unveiled at Chicago Center Set to Open on Juneteenth

A portrait of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama was unveiled Monday at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The work, titled “The Obamas: Springing Forth,” was painted by Los Angeles-based Nigerian-American artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby and incorporates recreations of 3,000 images from the couple’s lives.
” She noted that the former president and former first lady are “surrounded and partially covered” by the layered images.
The Obama Presidential Center building will be dedicated Thursday. It is scheduled to open to the public on Friday, June 19, which is Juneteenth. The center will remain under the control of the Obama Foundation.
The National Archives will manage former President Barack Obama’s presidential papers, which will be digitized.
