Portugal to Buy Three Frigates From Italy's Fincantieri

Portugal plans to purchase three FREMM EVO frigates from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The Italian prime minister announced the decision during a press conference. The prime minister said the agreement recognizes Italian defense industry capabilities.

The prime minister added that the purchase shows how Europe can strengthen its autonomy by investing in its own technological capacity and companies.

The deal is valued at nearly 3.9 billion euros, or about 4.6 billion dollars. CNN Portugal first reported in December that an agreement was expected. The FREMM EVO vessels measure 144 meters long and reach speeds above 27 knots. The ships will incorporate anti-drone systems and unmanned technology across air, surface, and underwater domains.

A Fincantieri spokesperson declined to comment on the announcement.
