Portugal Issues Red Heat Warnings for 12 Districts Through Saturday
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere issued red warnings for extreme heat across 12 mainland districts starting Thursday. Forecasts show highs of 41 to 44 degrees Celsius in parts of the Tagus Valley and Alentejo, with the episode expected to last at least one week.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere placed 12 of mainland Portugal's 18 districts under red warning for extreme heat from Thursday until at least Saturday. The red warnings cover Lisbon, Setúbal, Beja, Évora, Portalegre and Santarém from Thursday, with Aveiro, Braga, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Coimbra and Leiria added on Friday.
The remaining six districts—Bragança, Castelo Branco, Faro, Guarda, Vila Real and Viseu—stay under orange warning through Saturday.
Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 35 to 41 degrees Celsius across most of the mainland and 41 to 44 degrees Celsius in the Tagus Valley and Alentejo regions. Minimum temperatures will remain above 20 degrees Celsius in many areas, with Greater Lisbon seeing overnight lows of 24 to 28 degrees Celsius for several nights. An anticyclone located north of the Azores is driving the conditions.
The institute said the extreme-heat episode is expected to last at least one week. The ultraviolet index is projected to reach very high to extreme levels across all districts until Friday. Authorities advise against sun exposure around solar noon and recommend sunglasses with UV filter, a hat, T-shirt, sunshade and sunscreen.
Health measures include drinking at least 1.5 litres of water daily, staying in cool environments, avoiding outdoor exertion between 11:00 and 17:00, and wearing light-coloured loose clothing. People experiencing heat-related symptoms should call SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24 or the European emergency number 112.
