Pregnant 61-foot fin whale found dead on cruise ship bow in Seward, Alaska

A pregnant fin whale measuring 61 feet was found dead on the bulbous bow of a cruise ship that docked Friday in Seward, Alaska, @CBSNews reported. The whale was towed to a nearby beach where NOAA Fisheries Alaska began working with the Alaska SeaLife Center to conduct a necropsy. The examination confirmed the adult female was pregnant.
As of Monday neither organization had released details on the cause of death. NOAA Fisheries Alaska posted on Facebook that the public should stay off the beach at the necropsy site for safety and to allow space for the team to work. The post also stated it is illegal for anyone to collect tissue, baleen or any part of the whale unless they are an Alaska Native collecting for subsistence or handicrafts.
The law enforcement office of NOAA Fisheries has opened an investigation and maintains a 24-hour hotline for tips. Fin whales are the second-largest whale species and are found in oceans worldwide, according to NOAA Fisheries. Earlier this year the Marine Mammal Stranding Center investigated a separate fin whale found on a ship bow in Camden County, New Jersey.
