President Trump completed a two-day visit to Beijing that produced agreements for China to purchase U.S. soybeans and Boeing aircraft, including a commitment to order 200 jets. U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue said the visit addressed long-standing economic imbalances that have affected American strategic industries.
He described the talks as candid, cordial and consequential during an appearance on Fox and Friends Sunday.
Trade Commitments and Enforcement Mr.
Perdue noted that China has yet to fully follow through on a 2019 promise to purchase U.S. soybeans. He said the 2019 agreement was executed at about two thirds of the original target. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are involved in negotiations tied to 301 investigations into unfair trade practices.
Mr. Perdue said these investigations now carry more enforcement strength than previous efforts.
“Believe me, we’ve got 301 investigations underway right now. There are things, there’s a lot more teeth in these investigations now than there ever have been." — U.S. Perdue identified four areas of U.S. strategic vulnerability: rare earth elements, magnets, commercial shipbuilding and pharmaceuticals. He said China has demonstrated willingness to weaponize these dependencies. The ambassador stated that independent operation from China remains difficult given its status as the second-largest economy with 1.4 billion people. He said President Trump is working to correct economic trends from the past 25 years.”
It was also the first visit to China by a U.S. president since 2017. President Trump said the two sides settled multiple problems and described the relationship as very strong. He brought several U.S. executives on the trip, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook.
