President Trump Details Plan for White House Helipad to Protect Lawn

President Trump said Monday that a new helipad will be installed on the South Lawn to prevent damage from a more powerful Marine One helicopter now entering service. The helicopter, a VH-92A Patriot, produces roughly two and a half times the power of the older VH-3D Sea King it is replacing.
During a recent landing, officials observed that half the grass in front of the Oval Office was torn out and scattered.
The helipad will be constructed of granite and will include the White House seal. It is expected to cost about $6 million. The manufacturer will cover the expense after acknowledging it underestimated the helicopter's power, President Trump said. The new landing area could also serve as a venue for outdoor events such as presidential press conferences.
The administration is phasing out the 45-year-old VH-3D Sea King helicopters in favor of the newer model. President Trump said the change will allow retirement of the older aircraft while addressing the lawn damage.
During his second term, President Trump has directed several changes to the White House grounds and interior, including paving the Rose Garden and installing flagpoles on the North and South lawns. Other alterations include a black-granite walkway along the West Wing colonnade and demolition of the East Wing to create space for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom.
