President Trump met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on June 24, 2026. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also participated in the Oval Office session. Rutte used cardboard charts to illustrate increases in NATO countries' defense spending since 2017.
He stated that thousands of U.S. military planes had operated from bases in Europe during the conflict and described instances of allied reluctance as isolated cases. Trump said the alliance had let the U.S.
Down on the Iran effort. He added that the U.S. did not need help and praised Rutte's performance, stating that another secretary general would have made the meeting unnecessary. The discussion occurred ahead of a NATO leaders' summit scheduled for July in Ankara.
