President Trump terminated the three remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission on July 9, leaving the agency without any commissioners. Thomas Hicks and Christy McCormick received termination notices by email from the White House Presidential Personnel Office.
Benjamin Hovland, a Trump appointee from his first term, resigned the same day. A fourth commissioner, also appointed by Trump, had already left the panel in April. The Election Assistance Commission is a four-member federal body that serves as a national clearinghouse for election administration information.
It accredits testing laboratories, certifies voting systems, and maintains the national mail voter registration form created under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. The firings took place a few months before the 2026 midterm elections. They followed a June 29 Supreme Court decision that overturned prior limits on presidential authority to remove officials from independent agencies without cause.
The court upheld Trump's 2025 removal of former Federal Trade Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter in a 6-3 ruling. It remains unclear whether new commissioners will be appointed.
