President Trump Signs Proclamations Adding 50 Percent Tariffs on Canadian Cement, Wine, and Dairy Imports

President Trump signed three proclamations under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 that impose an additional 50 percent tariff on specified Canadian imports covering cement, wine, dairy products, hockey sticks, motor vehicles and alcohol products, and the measures apply only to goods from Canada and take effect August 19.

A senior administration official said the actions respond to discriminatory trade measures by Canada against U.S. alcohol, cars and dairy. The official stated that Canada has retained substantial retaliation against the United States while the U.S. pursues reindustrialization and manufacturing support. Canada must be held accountable for continued discrimination, the official added.
