President Trump completed a two-day visit to Beijing on Friday. The trip featured meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and a state banquet at Zhongnanhai. The White House described the visit as a success. Officials said it achieved the display of partnership the president had sought after years of tension.
Chinese social media resurfaced a nickname for President Trump that portrayed him as inadvertently advancing Chinese interests. Government statements in local media expressed confidence in American decline.
Trump told Fox News that the two leaders discussed Taiwan throughout the night. He said any attack would be met harshly. Trump also questioned Taiwan's position in a potential conflict. He noted its proximity to the Chinese mainland and distance from the United States.
The U.S. delegation included family members and business leaders. Chinese officials expressed uncertainty about the purpose of some attendees. President Trump said he felt honored by the welcome outside the Great Hall of the People. He noted he was the fourth U.S. president to visit Zhongnanhai.
Chinese officials had warned before the summit that minimal preparation would limit outcomes. Little of substance was accomplished during the talks.
