Nbc NewsVoters head to the polls Tuesday in primaries and runoffs across Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, California and the District of Columbia. The contests include Republican Senate and governor runoffs in Georgia and Alabama, a special primary in California’s 14th Congressional District, and a crowded Democratic primary for mayor in Washington, D.C.
Mike Collins in the Republican Senate runoff against former football coach Derek Dooley. Collins finished first in the May 19 primary with 40 percent of the vote; Dooley received 30 percent. The winner will face Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in November.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has backed Dooley and said he told the president a political outsider was needed to defeat Ossoff. Dooley has outspent Collins on television since the primary, while Collins has highlighted his authorship of the Laken Riley Act, the first bill Trump signed into law in his second term.
In the Republican governor runoff, Trump-backed Lt. Gov. Burt Jones faces billionaire businessman Rick Jackson. Jones received Trump’s endorsement after serving on the alternate slate of presidential electors in 2020. Jackson has spent more than $100 million of his own funds on the race.
The winner will face former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in November.
Rep. Barry Moore, who holds Trump’s endorsement, faces former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson in the Republican primary runoff to replace Sen. Tommy Tuberville. Moore received 39 percent of the vote on May 19; Hudson received 26 percent. Nearly $7 million has been spent on television ads, most of it supporting Moore.
Moore’s military service record has drawn scrutiny after a 2024 letter listed him as a retired staff sergeant. His campaign posted records showing an honorable discharge at the pay grade of staff sergeant but with the rank of cadet. Moore has said he did not serve in combat.
