Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the opening ceremony of the new Hatayelet neighborhood in Kibbutz Migdal Oz in Gush Etzion on June 28. The prime minister was accompanied by his wife, Sara Netanyahu, Noam Leiter, son of U.S. Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, and Ofri Nir, whose father was killed in combat in Gaza in January 2024.
The Prime Minister's Office stated that the new neighborhood is expected to double Migdal Oz's size within a year. Netanyahu described the community's growth as a "symbolic act" of historical return, national survival, and continuity.
The inauguration follows government approvals of dozens of new settlements and the establishment of at least 100 unauthorized outposts since the October 7, 2023 attacks, according to the United Nations and PeaceNow. A 2025 survey by the Shield of Abraham found that a majority of Israelis are critical of settlement expansions and believe such steps harm Israel's international standing.
