Princess of Wales to Visit Italy for Early Childhood Education Campaign
The Princess of Wales will travel to Italy next week for her first official overseas engagement in over three years. The solo trip to Reggio Emilia on May 13 and 14 focuses on the city's approach to early years learning. This marks a step in her return to duties after cancer treatment remission announced in January 2025.
dohanews.coThe Princess of Wales is scheduled to visit Italy next week, marking her first official overseas engagement since December 2022. During the visit, she will learn about the city's approach to early years learning, which emphasizes personal relationships, play-based learning, and children's interests.
A Kensington Palace spokesman stated that the princess is looking forward to the visit. The spokesman added that she will see how the Reggio Emilia approach integrates nature and human relationships to support children's development. The princess will meet educators, parents, children, local representatives, and business leaders in the city.
She announced in January 2025 that she was in remission from an undisclosed form of cancer. She has described her recovery as including good days and bad days, calling it a life-changing experience. Her last official overseas trip was to the United States in December 2022, accompanying Prince William to Boston.
Since then, there have been short trips to France and Jordan, as well as private holidays, but no official overseas engagements.
The visit adds an international element to the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, established in 2021. The center examines how adult issues such as addiction and mental health can originate in early childhood. The guide highlights the importance of social and emotional development.
“The quality of our connections - with ourselves, with others and with the world around us - shapes how safe we feel, how we relate, and how we process experiences throughout our lives." — The Princess of Wales, in the foreword to the guide (BBC News). The guide will be launched at the University of East London.”
