Prisons Minister Lord James Timpson Resigns After One Year in Post

Lord James Timpson resigned as prisons minister, The Bbc reported. He had held the post since his appointment in July 2024. The Bbc reported that Lord Timpson previously served as chief executive of the Timpson group, a company that provides key cutting and shoe repair services and employs hundreds of former prisoners.

In a departing statement issued on Monday, he said it was an "honour" to serve in the post. Lord Timpson stated he had left the prisons and probation service in a much healthier and happier state than two years ago. He added that he was proud to have become the longest-serving minister in the role for 15 years and that 75% of prisons and 90% of probation teams are now performing better than when he started.

He established the Women's Justice Board during his tenure. Lord Timpson said he believes most women should not be in prison at all. The Sentencing Act 2026 is scheduled to be enacted in September.
