foxnews.comProtesters smashed windows at a United Nations agency and set a Tesla vehicle on fire during a march in Geneva on June 14. The demonstration was held in opposition to the G7 summit scheduled for June 15-17 in the nearby French town of Evian-les-Bains.
Around 20,000 people took part in the march, which police described as largely peaceful. Officers confiscated knives and pyrotechnic devices during the event.
The Swiss government deployed 4,000 soldiers to support police, while France sent more than 13,000 officers. French and Swiss authorities restricted border crossings and banned most public gatherings in Geneva. Airspace restrictions, patrols on Lake Geneva, and road closures are in place. Only seven of 35 highway border crossings remain open.
The NoG7 coalition organized the march and posted demands that include ending trade relations with Israel, dismantling U.S. military bases in Europe, and dissolving the G7. Several participants said the G7 represents the world's wealthiest countries. One protester stated the meeting shows how the rich become richer while the poor are left behind.
2003, when the G8 summit was held in Geneva, anti-globalization protesters vandalized dozens of storefronts. Storefronts in Geneva were boarded up ahead of the current summit, and the World Trade Organization closed its offices.
