Protests Continue at Newark ICE Facility After Governor Denied Entry
Demonstrations outside Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, grew Monday after state officials were refused access. Federal agents in riot gear later cleared pathways and used pepper spray while protesters blocked vehicles.
america.cgtn.comU.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, intensified Monday after Gov. Mikie Sherrill was denied entry. Sherrill had requested access with members of Congress. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said visitation remained suspended because of the demonstrations.
ICE agents wearing riot gear arrived in the afternoon and removed people blocking the entrance. Some protesters threw objects and agents deployed pepper spray. Protesters later moved concrete slabs and orange barricades to block another entrance. S. Sen. Andy Kim asked demonstrators to step back from the agents.
Relatives of detainees have protested since Friday, alleging poor conditions and inadequate medical care. Sherrill met with family members, including Gabriela Soto, who said her husband was scheduled for release before being placed in a van. A DHS spokesperson stated an individual charged with assault was being transferred when protesters blocked the vehicle.
The spokesperson also said detainees receive three meals daily, clean water, bedding, and medical services. Sherrill said her request for access raised questions about transparency. She has opposed private detention facilities and called for the closure of Delaney Hall.
