Psychologist Describes Differentiation of Self as Key Relationship Skill

A May 23, 2026 article by psychologist Mark Travers states that differentiation of self is the primary skill associated with relationships that feel easier to maintain. The article defines differentiation of self as the ability to remain emotionally connected to a partner while preserving a stable sense of personal identity.

It distinguishes this capacity from emotional reactivity, in which a person absorbs a partner’s moods, and emotional cutoff, in which a person withdraws during conflict.

A 2022 scoping review in Clinical Psychology Review examined nearly 300 studies and found that higher differentiation correlated with stronger relationship functioning and psychological well-being across cultures. A 2023 longitudinal study published in PLOS One tracked 958 individuals in Spain and the United States and reported that higher differentiation predicted greater relationship quality and stability over time, along with reduced anxious and avoidant attachment.

A study in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy found that lower emotional reactivity and emotional cutoff predicted higher relationship satisfaction and sexual desire.

The article outlines three practices: noticing one’s reactivity threshold, using “I-position” statements that express personal feelings without demanding change from a partner, and maintaining interests and relationships outside the partnership.
