Psychologist Outlines Two Daily Skills for Relationship Maintenance

Psychological research indicates that long-term relationships depend on two skills practiced daily rather than on initial feelings alone. Love functions as a set of repeated actions involving attention, repair and effort, according to the article. Couples who view love as a fixed state often report uncertainty when difficulties arise, the psychologist stated.

A 2018 review in the Journal of Psychology in Africa identified five communication patterns associated with higher relationship satisfaction. These include everyday conversation, positive exchanges, effective conflict management, use of I-statements, and clarification requests.

The review found that absence of one or more of these patterns commonly contributes to communication difficulties. Long-term couples require continued intentional application of these patterns, the article noted.

A 2014 study in the International Journal of Listening defined active listening as receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to messages. The study outlined three components: visible engagement, withholding immediate judgment while paraphrasing, and asking thoughtful questions.
