Qatar has been working discreetly with Iranian officials to secure the release of five Jewish prisoners held in Iran, Israel's public broadcaster KAN News reported on Sunday. The detainees were arrested recently on charges that include criticizing the Islamic regime, the report said, against the backdrop of military escalation between the United States and Iran.
Citizens detained in Iran. Sources told KAN News that the Qatari moves are intended to generate goodwill with Washington. Tehran has released foreign prisoners in the past, including one American held since 2024; President Trump publicly thanked Iranian authorities after that release.
KAN News also noted earlier arrests in July 2025, when two American Jews were detained on suspicion of ties to Israel. One, an Iranian-American from Los Angeles, was later released on bail, while 33 additional Jews were arrested on the same charges at the time.
