Qatari Negotiators Arrive in Tehran While Israel Strikes Hezbollah Sites in Lebanon

Qatari negotiators flew to Tehran on Sunday morning to help finalize a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, according to a diplomat with knowledge of the talks. President Trump said on Saturday that the agreement would be signed on Sunday and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately afterward.

He also stated that Iran no longer wanted to pursue a nuclear weapon and that the United States would retrieve and destroy nuclear waste once conditions stabilized.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif posted on Saturday that finalization was likely expected within the next 24 hours and that technical-level talks would begin the following week if the deal were signed over the weekend. Iran's foreign ministry later said the memorandum would likely not be signed on Sunday.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told state media that the nuclear issue would not be addressed at this stage of the Islamabad memorandum.

The Israel Defense Forces struck a Hezbollah infrastructure site in Dahieh, Beirut on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement. The IDF described the target as a command center used by Hezbollah and said it employed precise munitions and aerial surveillance to limit civilian harm.

The strike responded to fire from Hezbollah, the ministers stated.

Lebanon reported Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday, and the IDF issued evacuation warnings for Nabatieh and more than 20 other locations. The IDF said it intercepted a rocket fired from southern Lebanon that night, with no injuries reported.
