Qualifier Otto Virtanen Upsets Ben Shelton in Five-Set Wimbledon First-Round Match

Ben Shelton lost in the first round at Wimbledon after a Finnish qualifier eliminated the fourth-seeded American in a five-set match on Tuesday. Shelton led 8-5 in the deciding tiebreaker and held match point at 9-8 but committed an unforced error and dropped the next two points. The final score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (9).

The 23-year-old Shelton said he had put himself in position to win but credited his opponent for coming up with key shots. He noted that the left-handed qualifier was aggressive and made few errors, especially on balls left semi-hanging in the final game before the tiebreaker.

Virtanen, ranked 140th, advanced through qualifying and called the victory the biggest of his career. The 25-year-old had reached the second round in his Wimbledon debut the previous year.

Zverev, the French Open champion, defeated Belgium's Alexander Blockx in four sets. Fifth-seeded Alex de Minaur and sixth-seeded Taylor Fritz also advanced on the same day. Fritz defeated Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 after an earlier scheduled match against Jack Draper was canceled due to injury.
