Quebec and federal government agree to let province handle environmental reviews for its projects

Quebec and the federal government reached an agreement in principle to streamline environmental assessments for major infrastructure and resource development projects, Cbc reported. Quebec Environment Minister Pascale Déry and Quebec Lieutenant Joel Lightbound announced the deal on Monday. The agreement aims to eliminate duplication and speed up reviews.

Projects under Quebec's jurisdiction will undergo only the province's evaluation. A 21-day public consultation on the agreement will occur this summer. Joel Lightbound stated the goal is to finalize the pact within a month.

Cbc reported that the federal government has reached similar agreements with seven other provinces in the last year.
