Rahm Receives Code-of-Conduct Warning After Club Incident at Open Championship

Jon Rahm received an official code-of-conduct warning from the R&A during the second round of the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale after throwing his club on the par-3 15th hole. The incident occurred on Friday, July 18, 2026. Rahm’s tee shot missed the green, and he flung his iron into the turf, causing the club to bounce across the tee box.

An R&A official approached Rahm on the 17th tee and issued the warning under the R&A’s new Code of Conduct. This was the third code-of-conduct ruling issued across the majors in 2026. Rahm accepted the warning but did not apologize for his temperament.

“I shouldn’t have acted that way but… I mean, you guys are acting like it’s every single hole. I had a moment,” Rahm said. ” He added that altering his personality too much on the course might cost him performance.

Rahm has a history of similar outbursts. At the PGA Championship in May 2026 at Aronimink, his air swing after a poor approach on the seventh hole sent a divot into a volunteer, striking the volunteer in the shoulder and face. At the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, he spiked a seven-iron into the turf after a wayward approach on the 16th hole.

At the 2023 PGA Championship, Rahm told an ESPN cameraman, “Stop aiming at my face when I’m mad. It’s all you guys do,” when he was 2 over par for the round. Rahm knows the margin for another incident is gone for the rest of the week.
