Las Vegas Raiders first-overall pick Fernando Mendoza said he is following Tom Brady’s guidance on the traits needed to lead an NFL team. Brady, a minority owner, addressed the franchise’s quarterbacks on competitiveness, toughness and leading by example.
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza said he is trying to lead by example after receiving advice from minority owner Tom Brady on the qualities required of a franchise quarterback. Mendoza, selected first overall in the most recent NFL draft, told the team’s YouTube channel that Brady spoke with him and the Raiders’ other quarterbacks about the demands of the position.
“I usually like to keep the talks between Tom and me private.
But I do think what he said as a quarterback is you need to be the most everything,” Mendoza said. “You need to be the most competitive. You need to be the most leader — you have to have the most leadership.
You need to be the toughest, mentally and physically. You’ve got to embody all these things and lead by example before getting the respect from your teammates, in order to lead effectively. ” Mendoza stated that he is attempting to follow the approach Brady described.
Brady, who was drafted as a backup quarterback, took on a leadership role in his second NFL season after Drew Bledsoe suffered an injury. Mendoza enters the league in a different position, with the Raiders expecting him to assume a leadership role immediately.
