Ramírez resumes batting practice after hand surgery

Cleveland third baseman José Ramírez is progressing from surgery that removed a portion of the hamate bone in his left hand and is scheduled to begin overhand batting practice within the next couple of days. The seven-time All-Star has been sidelined since the procedure on June 16. He suffered the injury while swinging against the Detroit Tigers three days earlier.

expectations Team president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said Ramírez has been hitting off a tee and remains on the original five- to seven-week recovery schedule. The club expects him back after the July 13-16 All-Star break. Antonetti noted that Ramírez previously underwent the same procedure on his right hand in 2019 and returned in 30 days.

He cautioned that each recovery is individual and that Ramírez still has several checkpoints to clear. "It's really individual specific," Antonetti said Sunday.
