RCMP in Grande Prairie, Alberta, have increased patrols near Muskoseepi Park trails after two random assaults occurred in the area earlier this month. On May 4, a person was struck in the back of the head with a pipe by a man on a bicycle on the trails between 68th Avenue and 84th Avenue. Two days later, a similar incident took place in the same section of the park.

A police spokesperson said the victims did not know each other and the attacks appeared to be random. The spokesperson added that both assaults are believed to be connected. The spokesperson stated that no further similar incidents have been reported since May 6. Police have added the area to regular patrol routes.

Park trails extend more than 10 kilometres through the city and pass near the Grande Prairie Museum & Heritage Village and Northwestern Polytechnic. Northwestern Polytechnic said its security staff continue to monitor campus and surrounding areas. The trails also connect to an 18-hole disc golf course called Thrill Hill.

The president of the local disc golf club said the incidents are concerning and advised users to remain cautious. He noted that the course is open at all hours and that many players prefer to go in groups, especially after dark. Police are asking anyone with video footage of the area to contact them and are urging trail users to stay vigilant.

The investigation remains ongoing.
