Boston Red Sox pitcher Ranger Suarez left his start Sunday with left adductor tightness after jumping for a chopper hit by Jo Adell. ESPN reported that the left-hander, named to the American League All-Star team on Saturday, threw one more pitch before exiting in the third inning of a 7-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
The Red Sox bullpen then combined for 4⅓ hitless innings, with Greg Weissert, Tyron Guerrero and Garrett Whitlock pitching effectively before Justin Slaten allowed a run in the eighth and Aroldis Chapman surrendered a solo home run to Zach Neto in the ninth but secured his 18th save.
Suarez said through an interpreter that he felt a big pinch around the groin area on the pitch after the leap and tried one more before coming out. Boston interim manager Chad Tracy expressed concern but said the team would assess the injury on Monday, noting uncertainty about whether an MRI would be needed or if Suarez might land on the injured list.
Suarez is 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA and 97 strikeouts this season and had dealt with right hamstring tightness earlier in the year.
The win completed a three-game sweep for the Red Sox, who have won eight of their last 10 games, while the Angels have lost six straight. Tracy praised the bullpen's performance from the third inning on. If Suarez goes on the injured list, teammate Sonny Gray could be added to the All-Star team.
