Red Sox Defeat Angels 8-1 as Gray Improves to 10-1

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels 8-1 on July 5 in Anaheim, California. Sonny Gray pitched six innings, allowing one run and four hits while striking out seven and walking two. Gray improved to a 10-1 record with a 2.61 ERA, the second-best mark in the American League.

Gray has recorded six straight quality starts since May 30, going 5-0 with a 1.97 ERA in that span. In his previous start against the New York Yankees, he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning over 7⅓ innings, allowing one hit and striking out nine.

All-Star rosters were announced on July 4.

Fellow starter Ranger Suarez and closer Aroldis Chapman were the only Boston players selected for the American League team. "I was disappointed, a little bummed, for sure," Gray said. "I'm just being honest, you know? " Interim manager Chad Tracy said there is a good chance Gray will be added to the AL All-Star roster.

"When the All-Star Game happens, there's so much roster fluctuation. It happens every year with pitchers who can't go, people are hurt, people back out," Tracy said.
