The 27-year-old had signed a minor-league contract with Boston after becoming a free agent following the 2025 season. The New York Yankees drafted Sikkema in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He made four starts for the Yankees organization that year and did not pitch again until 2022.
In 2022 the Yankees included Sikkema in the trade package sent to the Kansas City Royals for Andrew Benintendi. Sikkema later joined the Cincinnati Reds organization and reached Triple-A for the first time in 2025, making five appearances. Last week the Red Sox also released veteran pitcher Jacob Webb after six years in the organization.
Forbes reported the transaction from the official log and noted that Sikkema’s professional path has included multiple organizations and injury setbacks since his first-round selection seven years earlier.
