Reflecting Pool Algae and Surface Issues Prompt Investigation

The Reflecting Pool showed algae growth and sections of its new surface coating peeling after a multi-million-dollar renovation completed earlier this month. Workers applied hydrogen peroxide and used nanobubble ozone technology to address the algae. Officials said the chemical treatment is milder than chlorine and has no harmful effects on marine life.

The basin underwent draining and resurfacing with a blue coating after being described as needing repair. Federal records show the project cost over $14 million. Within days of refilling, visitors observed green water and floating material. An analysis found algae levels higher than any recorded June point in at least five years.

Department said the department is deploying additional purification measures. Officials stated that law enforcement is actively investigating the surface damage. The administration has designated cleanup of the pool a priority ahead of July 4.
