Reform UK proposes banning foreign nationals from social housing, with three-month deadline or possible deportation
Nigel Farage said foreign-national tenants would have three months to secure private accommodation or face potential deportation. The policy would apply retrospectively and include EU citizens.
rte.ieNigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, said his party would ban foreign nationals from social housing if it forms the next UK government. Under the plan, foreign-national tenants would have three months to find private accommodation or potentially face deportation. The party confirmed the ban would apply retrospectively, regardless of how long a foreign national has lived in the UK.
The measure would also cover EU citizens, who would lose access to social housing. Reform UK has previously announced plans to abolish Indefinite Leave to Remain. It also intends to renegotiate post-Brexit treaties with the EU on aspects of citizens’ rights that are “non-reciprocal”.
A Government spokesman stated that nearly nine in ten social homes go to UK nationals. The spokesman added that most councils already apply tough local connections rules to ensure housing goes to people who need it most. Farage made the announcement as Reform UK seeks to counter electoral pressure from the Restore Britain movement led by Rupert Lowe.
