A Renault 4 E-Tech electric car completed a 1,000-mile journey from John O'Groats to Land's End using only solar power, GB News reported. The Plein Sud variant followed the sun during the summer solstice. Energy came from established solar installations and portable solar-charged energy storage delivered through a Charge Pro three-phase EV charger provided by Easee, with no electricity drawn from the grid.
The first stop after Land's End was the UK's oldest commercial solar farm at Chard Junction for the initial recharge. Additional stops included Roskilly's Ice Cream in Cornwall, where solar panels support business operations, and Whaley Bridge Cricket Club in Derbyshire, which runs fully off-grid to power its pavilion.
The vehicle also visited Swansea University, where Power Roll develops rollable solar films using photovoltaic technology, and a solar pyramid south of Edinburgh.
Off-grid homes and businesses on the east coast of Scotland were included in the route. Project leader Jeremy Hart said the trip shifted attention from the endpoints to intermediate sites. "One stop is a solar farm doing exactly what you'd expect, the next is a cricket club running itself off grid, then you're looking at research that could change how solar works altogether," he stated.
