Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens called on primary opponent Abdul el Sayed to drop his endorsement of William Lawrence over past comments. The request came during a festival appearance in Farmington on Friday.
Washington ExaminerRep. Haley Stevens called on her Democratic primary rival Abdul el Sayed to withdraw his endorsement of William Lawrence on Friday. Washington Examiner reported that Stevens spoke at a festival in the Detroit suburb of Farmington, Michigan.
Stevens said Lawrence’s remarks were unacceptable. “He should totally not be campaigning with someone who’s saying goofy and hurtful and painful things like that,” she stated. ” Stevens further said she stood with the Congressional Black Caucus.
“I don’t know the guy, I don’t like what I’ve heard, and I stand by my brothers and sisters in the Congressional Black Caucus in saying that he should be unendorsed by Abdul, and he should really think twice about why he’s running right now,” she said. The Congressional Black Caucus PAC endorsed Stevens on Friday. A week earlier the group had urged candidates not to affiliate with Lawrence.
Lawrence made the comments on a 2024 episode of his podcast and later described them as “clumsy” while accusing opponents of taking his words out of context. Stevens and el Sayed are competing in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s Senate seat, scheduled for Aug. 4.
El Sayed and Lawrence are scheduled to appear at a rally in Lansing on Sunday with Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The winner of the primary will face former Rep. Mike Rogers, the presumptive Republican nominee, in the 2026 general election.
A Detroit News survey showed Stevens leading el Sayed among black voters by double digits.
