Rep. Tom Kean Jr. Expected to Return to Capitol Hill on Tuesday

Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey is expected to return to Capitol Hill on Tuesday after an undisclosed ailment kept him out of public view for months. Kean last voted on March 5 and has missed more than 140 votes.

House GOP leaders have sought to advance legislative priorities with narrow margins during his absence. House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke with Kean by phone on April 24. Johnson stated at the time that Kean was attending to a personal health matter and expected to be back to 100 percent very soon.

Weeks later Johnson told reporters that Kean sounded good and optimistic during the call but added that he did not know the details of the condition. Kean issued his first public statement on April 27. He said he was addressing a personal medical issue and that his doctors assured him recovery would be complete.

He added that he expected to return to a full schedule and be at 100 percent. His chief of staff told the New York Times there are no cameras where Kean is. On May 15 former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean Sr.

Told NJ.com that his son's illness was serious but temporary and that he was under a doctor's care away from home. The elder Kean said his son would be out in two or three weeks and told CNN the same day that the illness would not linger or cause future incapacitation. Kean electronically signed congressional disclosure documents on his stock trades on March 18, April 13 and May 22.

In a May 21 interview with the New Jersey Globe he said his doctors were confident he was on the road to full recovery and that he understood the need for public transparency. On June 2 Kean issued a statement via his campaign saying he was focused on recovery and would transition from virtual to in-person work within weeks under healthcare professionals' advice.
