A new poll shows Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra effectively tied in California’s governor’s race just two weeks before the June 2 primary. The survey of 1,200 likely voters, conducted between May 14 and 16, found Hilton supported by 22% and Becerra by 21%. The poll was released Tuesday by the state Democratic Party.

His top Republican challenger, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, received 10% support. Becerra, a former Health and Human Services secretary who also served in Congress and as California attorney general, remains the top Democrat. Billionaire Tom Steyer, who has spent millions on television and digital ads, placed third with 15%.

Former congresswoman Katie Porter received 7%. San José Mayor Matt Mahan received 4%.

Becerra’s standing improved after former congressman Eric Swalwell withdrew from the race amid sexual misconduct and assault allegations. Becerra told reporters after a campaign event in South Los Angeles that voters are now paying closer attention.

“They’re really looking closely at who’s out there, and I think I’ve been one of the beneficiaries of folks looking for a place that they can feel comfortable, where they can trust.”

He added that voters are skeptical of Steyer’s heavy spending. Ballots have been mailed to 23.1 million registered voters, though most have not yet been returned. Democratic Party chairman Rusty Hicks said the party is closer to its goal of a strong Democrat reaching the general election. The poll has a margin of error of 2.83%.
