The article also reviewed Democratic primary dynamics in Iowa ahead of a June 2 Senate nomination contest.
foxnews.comLast fall, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun called a special session of the General Assembly to redraw the state’s congressional map at Trump’s request. Eight Republican state senators refused to support the measure, causing it to fail. Those eight senators then faced primary challenges.
Trump endorsed seven of the challengers, who also received financial backing from aligned groups. Six of the challengers won their races, one incumbent survived, and one race remained too close to call. The Dispatch reported that Trump’s ability to influence voters is expected to remain a theme in upcoming midterm elections.
Numerous politicians who have opposed the president have either retired or lost reelection bids.
Massie Faces Primary Challenge in Kentucky Rep.
Thomas Massie has represented Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District since 2012 and has typically won reelection easily. Massie drew Trump’s opposition after voting against defense spending packages, aid to Israel, the farm bill, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in 2025.
Massie also worked with Democrats to pass the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which passed the House 427-1 and the Senate unanimously before Trump signed it into law on November 19, 2025. Trump supported dairy farmer and military veteran Ed Gallrein as a challenger to Massie in the May 19 primary.
The race is considered close. A veteran Kentucky political observer told The Dispatch he could not predict the outcome, saying he had not seen a similar election in decades.
It noted that the party’s progressive wing has been active on issues including transgender athletes in women’s sports and police funding. The piece cited the Biden administration’s support for Israel during its war against Hamas as a factor in the 2024 presidential election outcome.
In Iowa, the June 2 Senate primary features progressive state Sen. Zach Walls against state Rep. Josh Turek. Turek has the support of former Sen. Tom Harkin. The Dispatch reported from a May Day event in rural Henry County attended by Walls. The contest is expected to provide information on current sentiments among Democratic voters.
The newsletter summarized recent primary activity in both parties as voters prepare for fall elections.
