A Gallup Values and Beliefs survey conducted May 1-17, 2026, shows Republican support for legal recognition of same-sex marriage at 37 percent. The figure marks a decline from 55 percent recorded in 2021 and 2022. Overall national support stands at 65 percent, compared with roughly 42 percent two decades ago.

Poll results and trends Gallup senior editor Jeffrey Jones said Republican attitudes had moved upward in parallel with national trends before reversing direction. He noted that the 2024 campaign period coincided with the shift. Support among Republicans has returned to levels last seen in 2015.

Legal and advocacy context The Supreme Court declined last year to revisit its 2015 decision establishing nationwide recognition of same-sex marriage. Shannon Minter, legal director at the National Center for LGBTQ+ Rights, said some conservative organizations continue to seek reconsideration of the ruling.

Minter stated that bipartisan legal efforts produced earlier gains that would be difficult to replicate under current partisan conditions. Katie Blair, vice president of advocacy at PFLAG National, said marriage equality affects access to legal rights and benefits tied to marital status.

The survey carries a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
