Rescued loggerhead turtle cleared for release in Azores

The turtle, named Crush, was found on a beach on 19 January appearing lifeless and suffering from hypothermia and malnutrition. It was flown to Southampton and later transferred to a sea life centre in Weymouth for care.

Recovery and preparation Staff conducted regular CT scans and weight checks during the turtle's stay. Officials said the animal met all criteria for return to warmer waters. The turtle is currently in quarantine at the centre ahead of a planned flight of about 1,500 miles. A team from the centre will accompany the turtle from Heathrow Airport.

Release plans Upon arrival in the Azores, the turtle will spend several days in a specialised facility before being released from a boat off the coast. The move is expected by the end of July. Loggerhead turtles are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, with an estimated 2,000 breeding females worldwide.

The species is typically found in subtropical waters off north Africa and has occasionally been recorded farther north after storms.
