Research Links Thinking About Death to Reduced Anxiety and Longer Life
Studies indicate that reflecting on mortality can increase positive emotions and lower anxiety. Experts note that many Americans avoid the topic, which may heighten fear and reduce preparation for end-of-life decisions.
tim.blogResearch published in 2007 found that thinking about mortality helped participants focus more on positive emotions. A separate 2017 study reported an association between discussing death and lower anxiety about it. Dr. Brian Carpenter, professor of psychological and brain sciences at Washington University in St.
Louis, said many people in the United States avoid thinking or talking about death, which can increase fear and leave individuals less prepared.
Cultural Views and Aging Dr.
Erin Emery-Tiburcio, a geropsychologist and professor at Rush University in Chicago, said not every person fears death itself, but many fear the suffering that may accompany the end of life. She added that limited contact between younger and older adults can reinforce negative stereotypes about aging.
A 2002 study found that individuals with positive perceptions of their own aging were more likely to live longer. Emery-Tiburcio stated that focusing on aspects within personal control, such as health behaviors, can improve outcomes.
Carpenter said preparation includes organizing personal affairs, discussing wishes with family members, and using available time in ways that feel meaningful. He noted that cultural rituals around burial and memorial help communities acknowledge loss and support one another.
Emery-Tiburcio recommended participating in death cafes or grief support groups and practicing mindfulness to remain focused on the present rather than anticipating future uncertainty.
