Three residents filed a class action lawsuit Tuesday in federal court on behalf of an estimated 10,000 people living near a gas-fired power plant in Southaven, Mississippi. The complaint names xAI, SpaceX, and xAI subsidiary MZX Tech as defendants and alleges the plant's turbines create "omnipresent and inescapable" noise and vibrations.

The suit claims the companies negligently failed to limit the disturbance and created a public nuisance. Plaintiffs seek damages for alleged emotional distress, reduced property values, and other harms, plus an unspecified portion of profits from the facility.

Background on the facility The plant supplies electricity to Colossus 1 and two other xAI data centres located along the Mississippi-Tennessee border. xAI invested more than $20 billion to build the Southaven site with state support. xAI and SpaceX did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Elon Musk is not named as a defendant.

Related legal actions In April the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People filed a separate lawsuit against xAI alleging violations of U.S. environmental rules at the same site. The U.S. Justice Department indicated last month it might intervene in that case, citing questions about the government's role in AI infrastructure.
