Film Heritage Foundation’s 4K restoration of the 1986 Malayalam film Amma Ariyan receives its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday in the Cannes Classics strand. The film is the only Indian feature with a world premiere at this year’s festival. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Film Heritage Foundation has brought a restored Indian film to the French Riviera.

U.S. Venkiteswaran, a journalist, brought the Odessa Collective members together to give permission to restore Amma Ariyan. The 1986 film was directed by John Abraham.

Rights to Amma Ariyan belonged to the Odessa Collective, a grassroots filmmaking group co-founded by John Abraham that funded the project village by village. When the team searched for original materials through the FIAF network, they found only two 35mm prints held at the National Film Archive of India. No camera negative of Amma Ariyan existed.

No original sound recording of Amma Ariyan had survived. K. Nair. One 35mm print carried subtitles burned into the image while the other did not. Both prints showed significant physical deterioration, with damaged splices and emulsion loss.

The unsubtitled print became the primary restoration source for Amma Ariyan. The subtitled print was used to fill gaps in the restoration of Amma Ariyan. After initial conservation work in India, the restoration was carried out at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna and Digital Film Restore Pvt.

Ltd. More than 4,000 individual interventions were made on the audio alone during the restoration of Amma Ariyan. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur kept in close contact with cinematographer Venu and editor Bina Paul during the restoration.

Venu, Bina Paul, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, and lead actor Joy Mathew are at Cannes to present the restored Amma Ariyan. “John was not very fond of foley,” Dungarpur says, relaying what Paul confirmed with the film’s sound recordist. In many scenes where a conventional filmmaker would have layered in the sound of footsteps or ambient movement, Abraham chose silence.

John Abraham drew on the cinema verite tradition, the Cuban school of filmmaking, and the lessons of Ritwik Ghatak. Amma Ariyan was shot in black and white under low-light conditions. The restoration philosophy was one of preservation rather than correction, honoring the handheld instability and textural grain as signatures of its style.

“I wanted to leave it the way – that inherent quality of the cinema verité style, the handheld, the documentary,” Dungarpur says. John Abraham died in 1987 at age 49. He made only four films. The British Film Institute placed Amma Ariyan on a 2001 ranking of the ten best Indian films ever made.

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur was a student at FTII when he first encountered John Abraham’s work. At a FIAF assembly in Rabat last month, Film Heritage Foundation was elected a permanent member of the federation by unanimous vote. Screening requests for the restored Amma Ariyan have arrived from South America and beyond.
