Retailers Discount Grills, Mattresses and Travel Gear for Memorial Day
More than half of shoppers plan to take part in Memorial Day sales this weekend, though spending is expected to be lower than in prior years. Retail experts advise buying seasonal outdoor items, mattresses and major appliances now while skipping most electronics and summer clothing.
lifehacker.comRetailers are cutting prices on grills, outdoor furniture, pizza ovens and other warm-weather goods to clear inventory before summer ends. A RetailMeNot survey found that more than 50 percent of shoppers intend to participate in the sales, but many expect to spend less because of higher gas and grocery costs.
Stephanie Carls, a retail insights expert at RetailMeNot, said seasonal home and outdoor products align with what shoppers want at this time of year. Ashley Feinstein Gerstley of Rakuten noted that similar items may be cheaper around July Fourth or Labor Day, but selection shrinks later in the season.
Travel-related products such as luggage and packing cubes are also on sale as retailers respond to increased summer-trip planning. com. Mattress and major-appliance sales are described as especially strong during the holiday weekend. New mattress models arrive in spring, prompting stores to move last year’s stock, Carls said.
Retailers often add delivery, installation or bundle discounts on washers, dryers and similar items when purchase totals exceed set amounts.
Electronics including laptops, tablets and smart-home devices typically see deeper cuts during back-to-school promotions and Amazon Prime Day in June, Vipin Porwal of Smarty said. Summer clothing such as swimsuits and shorts reaches lowest prices in July and August when retailers clear remaining inventory.
Carls and Gerstley both recommended making a shopping list and setting a spending limit before browsing. Price-tracking tools such as CamelCamelCamel and Honey can show whether a discount is meaningful or based on an inflated original price. Porwal advised using cashback browser extensions, especially on higher-priced purchases.
