Retired Nigerian General Dies in Bandit Captivity After Two Weeks
Major General Rabe Abubakar died from diabetes and hypertension complications while held by bandits in Katsina State. The Defence Headquarters said it had intensified operations against terrorist networks following the incident.
rt.comRetired Major General Rabe Abubakar died in bandit captivity two weeks after he and his wife were abducted near Matazu in Katsina State while traveling to a wedding. The Katsina State Government confirmed the death in a statement issued by Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs Nasir Muazu.
The statement said Abubakar died from complications of diabetes and hypertension, and that state and federal security agencies had made unsuccessful efforts to secure his release.
The Defence Headquarters issued a statement signed by Director of Defence Information Major General Samaila Uba. It expressed condolences to the Abubakar family and described the retired officer's service as Director of Defence Information and in other military spokesman roles.
The statement said the Armed Forces had deployed every operational resource during the rescue effort and would intensify operations against terrorist networks in response to the abduction and similar incidents.
Radda called the death a dark moment and said it highlighted the need for stronger coordination against insecurity. He extended condolences to the family and pledged continued work with security agencies.
Reaction African Democratic Congress National Chairman
Senator David Mark described the death as a national tragedy. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Kola Ologbondiyan, Mark called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria's security architecture and urged national unity against terrorism and banditry.
